Hancock on DVD 2017-

The Tony Hancock Collection

Originaly released in 2007, this Tony Hancock Collection received a rebranding during 2018 along with many other comedy classics so that they now all appear in the same format. The content contains all of the surviving half hours from the BBC archive, together with an audio commentary on The Blood Donor, There’s an Airfield at the Bottom of my Garden and Twelve Angry Men.  The release also contains the interview with Galton & Simpson (previously released on ‘The Very Best Of Hancock DVD), the Face to Face interview with John Freeman plus scanned copies of the scripts for all of the missing programmes. More importantly, all of the programmes on this release are the original programmes, with the exception of The New Nose, which is the 1986 video release version.   The definitive collection of Tony’s BBC television work

The Rebel

The Rebel was reissued on DVD in September 2019 following an extensive restoration by Network DVD. Network DVD even went to the trouble of showing a premiere of the restoration at The Prince of
Wales Cinema in Leicester Square, London on 23 September 2019 with the film being introduced by Paul Merton

So what difference does the restoration bring?  The view from the THAS is the difference is incredible.  The colours on the previous release were quite dull and lacklustre whilst the new colours are really vibrant.  Also, the screen aspect on the new release is 1.66:1 compared to the 4:3 of the previous release. In short, Network has done an amazing job on these restorations and we can finally see the films as the original audiences would have done back in the 1960s.

The Punch and Judy Man

The Punch and Judy Man was reissued on DVD in September 2019 following an extensive restoration by Network DVD.

As with the re-release of The Rebel (see above), Network have done a fanrastic job on the restoration with the new version of the film restored to its original length.  At long last we can see a number of previously deleted scenes, including the famous scene where Tony inserts some flowers in the back of a china pig!

Also, the screen aspect on the new release is 1.66:1 compared to the 4:3 of the previous release. In short, Network has done an amazing job on these restorations and we can finally see the films as the original audiences would have done back in the 1960s

Futtock's End

This delightful DVD / BluRay releases features four short films, all of them carefully remastered.  Futtock’s End (starring Ronnie Barker and Michael Hordern) is accompanied by San Ferry Ann, A Home of Your Own and Vive Le Sport.  So what is this release doing on the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society list of Hancock related DVDs?

The reason is that this release starts (prior to the menu appearing) with remastered trailers for both The Rebel and The Punch and Judy Man, Tony’s only starring films. A brilliant addition to this great release.
